They said it could never happen here…

You know, I grew up in the United States, and, I guess because it was the latest major killing spree, they drilled Nazi and World War II stuff into our heads incessantly when I was in school. At times, we joked that they should have just renamed history class “Hitler Class”.

These studies would inevitably devolve into debates about whether such things could happen here. The answer was always assuredly “no”. “No”, because this is a “free” country, and we are a “democracy”, and so on and so forth.

Well, it has to be said that Hitler rose out of the worst economic times in Germany’s history; he was the savior who presided over the fixing of that, and so for it the Germans gave him way too much leeway to conduct his twisted Jew-hating world conquest campaign.

So, a theory develops: in times of crisis, people seem to lose their logic, and allow governments carte blanche, to do basically whatever they want.

Which brings us back to the “Land of the Free”. After we had a disaster (mind you, a bad disaster, but nothing like what some other countries have experienced, like, on a yearly basis), we’ve already lapsed into shades of totalitarianism. Just like that. The legislation that followed 9/11/2001 carried with it unprecendented mandate for our law enforcement community, much of which is patently in violation of the Constitution, but no one seems to care.

And this is frightening.

And now, I’m even more frightened.

For proof that it is our government itself that has become the terrorists, the state of New Jersey has announced that if the Federal government declares a “Red Alert”, the state will be under martial law.

No, I’m not making this up. And, I’m sure this will just be fine with everyone; after all, the government “cares” about our safety, right?

The best quote from the linked article: “…you will be assumed by authorities to be the enemy if you so much as venture outside your home…” The reporter telling it like it is, indeed.

Now who is it that won the War on Terror again?
