…that the World Trade Center is STILL burning? It was infesting the air in my neighborhood again.

I just can’t get used to the new-look skyline.

Maybe I should start referring to it as the ‘World Trade Pile’ instead? (I know…very dark humor. So shoot me. It helps.)

CNN sucks

Can someone please explain to me why CNN apparently is incapable of operating microphones?

Like many Americans, I’ve been glued to the news networks much more than usual, and I had always thought (or been told, anyway), that CNN was a really together network. But the production competency I’ve seen is comparable to public access.

They have more audio problems than I’ve ever seen a news network have.

And, then there’s the little problem of them basically acting as a propaganda machine, while the rest of the world’s news outlets actually report on the balance that exists in this 9/11 situation.

In typical fashion, all they report is our side of this tragedy (candlelight “vigils”, religious services, economic difficulties, etc.), and the only time Arabs appear, it is as “Islamic fundamentalist terrorists”.

Though the dust settles, the haze hasn’t really lifted from this city.

Now that my neighborhood is open again to traffic, it feels more normal, but there’s something different about this place now.

Most of my friends and I walk around, and we still all stop every now and then, looking south, I guess in a feeble attempt to will them back, but the towers are still very much gone.

The rescue workers, who are quickly becoming more of a cleanup crew, must feel completely demoralized. it’s pretty obvious that no one’s alive in that pile, and basically, now they’re just cleaning up the mess.

Worst news of all

Wednesday night Glenda and I went out for a walk, all around the city, and there’s an eerie calm over the city right now. The air smelled of burning plastic, and made your eyes water.

We actually have “smoke reports” along with weather reports on the local news (complete with maps of which way the wind is blowing the smoke).

It feels incredibly safe here at the moment. of course, we’re living in basically a police state. Tomorrow they are opening up the city further (down to Canal Street), but for the past two days I’ve had to show ID just to walk below Houston Street (to the grocery store).

Last night we happened on a candlelight vigil in Washington Square Park. It was peaceful and beautiful there, but people were somber and quiet.

In Union Square, there’s an anti-war demonstration. People have put down paper and markers, and people have scrawled their opinions that peace should prevail over continued violence.

Went downtown…didn’t like what I saw

Yesterday afternoon I decided to get on my bike and go downtown.

I wanted to all day, but I assumed it would be like a police state down there; that they wouldn’t even let me get close.

Well, that is true; I didn’t get too close, obviously (7 world trade hadn’t yet collapsed), but I got a lot closer than I thought I would.

Park Row (a street that runs diagonally from Broadway to the Brooklyn Bridge) was completele covered in ash…apparently it was obliterated concrete…wallboard…etc.

You ever wondered how much junk mail there is in the world? If the WTC was any indication, there’s a shitload. There’s a ton of papers among the ash, and I saw a few shoes and other items, too.

People milling about were a mix of news media, normal citizens, and emergency workers. There were a lot of others…people like me, on their bikes, just needing a closeup look, just needing a confirmation of what happened to our city.

So they took away my beautiful view and replaced it with a plume of smoke.

For those who have never visited NYC, the World Trade Center is (was) an absolutely immense structure. Maybe not the most elegant skyscraper in the world, but definitely one of the most immense. It was the most visible marker on the skyline of this city. On a given business day, there are like 30,000 workers inside.

This happened early in the morning, so there may have only been half that many. these people may well have killed 10-20,000 people.

When it comes to war, I’m largely a pacifist. I actually agree that the evils currently being perpetrated by Israel on the Palestinian/Muslim people are despicable.

However, this matter doesn’t involve Israel anymore, and while I have a problem with war, I have no problem with vengeance.

Whether this was motivated by the Middle East crisis, or domestic problems, or something else, the people involved should be found, and systematically executed. Period.
