It’s been a long time since my last post. Truth be told, I’ve been stimulated to write on a few occasions, but just too busy to write anything.

Anyhow, I’m annoyed today, and there’s nothing that motivates me like a little annoyance. There is yet another Windows-specific worm going around in email right now called Sobig-F. This the same old, same old design: An attachment which presumably scans your address book apps and then sends itself around to everyone you know, posing as you.

Of course, I’m running Mac OS X, so I am immune to actually being infected by this stupid thing, but unfortunately I still get the damned emails. I’ve been getting ~10 an hour for the past three days or so.

But what I wanted to quickly comment on is this: brain-dead sysadmins who set up their mail servers to reject all “infected” mail, and sent an auto-response back to the “sender” of the message informing them that they are infected.

Hello, dumbasses?! What worms like this do is send emails posing as you…it doesn’t mean the email actually comes from you, and, therefore, you are probably not infected. So, these asshole sysadmins exacerbate the problem by multiplying the email that’s sent around by this work by a LOT.

Everyone, please, turn off those stupid auto-responders.

Thank you for your time.

In a fairly recent Ars Technica article, John Siracusa layed out in great detail his issues with the Mac OS X Finder, and argued that Apple needs to clean it up by restoring what he has termed “The Spatial Finder”. I could probably write a ten page thesis on this, but I’ll try to be relatively brief.

Basically, the spatial Finder (which was copied and has been pretty much retained by Windows) refers to the idea that the organization of folders, files and so on on the computer have a spatial relevance, just like files and folders in real life, so that people can always find them, and so forth. Siracusa goes on in his article to basically list a laundry list of potential enhancements to the Finder, and then tries ‘real hard’ to make them fit into his “spatial” paradigm.

Then, we hear today that Apple’s upcoming Panther release of OS X (presumably 10.3) will contain new, groundbreaking features, like “piles” (what an awful name), and so forth, that also relate to a spatial paradigm (like piles of papers on your desk), from patented Apple technologies, some of which are discussed here.

I have a problem with all of this: computers aren’t real life, and it’s time we ditched these stupid spatial metaphors, and allowed computers to advance in terms of cataloguing information to a point way beyond spatial limitations. Allow me to elaborate.

(...)
Read the rest of Time to ditch the spatial Finder (840 words)
