According to a BBC article, Wong Kar Wai has been chosen as the president of the jury for this year’s Cannes Film Festival.

He apparently released a statement which contained an amusingly Wong Kar Wai-ish quote: “Every town has its own language. In Cannes, it’s the language of dream.” Mm-hmm…

Anyhow, I had to steal their AFP-credited picture and place it here, because…well…is it just me, or is sunglasses and cigarette part of the required Hong Kong director uniform?

Seriously, very glad to see him get some well-deserved attention. I admire him for his talent, but I also admire him because he doesn’t really play by the rules, and he is mostly self-taught. People who don’t travel with the herd, and succeed in spite of it are deserved of acclaim.

While the United States is celebrating its heroes, who are invading a foreign land and killing people, other heroes are working around the world to save people.

Dr. Carlo Urbani, an Italian doctor who spent much of his career tracking infectious diseases among children in Africa, and was among a group that won a Nobel prize in 1999, was the sharp guy that noticed that SARS (as they are now calling it) was not a normal flu virus, as was first thought.

Now, sadly, he succumbed to the same disease himself.

You know, while Bush requests that congress appropriate him 100 billion dollars to invade Iraq and murder people, it makes me think what someone like Carlo Urbani could have done with 100 billion dollars…

I was reading a book of essays by Albert Einstein the other day (full report about that some other time), and, in these times of the “war on terrorism”, as the American propaganda machine is calling it, I came across these thoughts about the military by Albert Einstein, in the midst of a rant about “herd life”:

This topic brings me to that worst outcrop of herd life, the military system, which I abhor. That a man can take pleasure in marching in fours to the strains of a band is enough to make me despise him. He has only been given his big brain by mistake; unprotected spinal marrow was all he needed. This plague-spot of civilization ought to be abolished with all possible speed. Heroism on command, senseless violence, and all the loathsome nonsense that goes by the name of patriotism — how passionately I hate them! How vile and despicable seems war to me! I would rather be hacked in pieces than take part in such an abominable business. My opinion of the human race is high enough that I believe this bogey would have disappeared long ago, had the sound sense of the peoples not been systematically corrupted by commercial and political interests acting through the schools and the press.

Wow….harsh words from Mr. Einstein.

(...)
Read the rest of The military (146 words)
