Once I again I want to chime in on the uselessness of tradition. And in this case, not only the uselessness, but the actual net negative that comes from getting set in our ways. In the United States, we have this idiotic tradition known as Daylight Savings Time.

The tradition works like this: twice every year we screw with everyone’s sleep schedule by tampering with the clocks. We move the time either an hour ahead or an hour behind, depending on the season, so as to maximize the light in the morning. Now that I live in a country that doesn’t do this, it makes me rather happy, because I always loathed this twice yearly inconvenience. Now it seems the time change’s downside exceeds mere annoyance: it’s killing people.

First, let me just say to the BBC, kudos on the “cheeky” headline: “Sumos Split Over Shorts Squabble“.

So, it appears that in japan they’re thinking of allowing a replacement for the Giganto-Thong that sumo wrestlers have traditionally worn in competitions, but of course the old guard doesn’t like it. On the one hand, this dispute is kind of interesting, but on the other hand, it’s just the same old story: we find a replacement for something traditional, and people who are used to things a certain way just resist. Ultimately, I don’t think it would matter much to the sport if they changed from Giganto-Th….errr…mawashi to shorts, since it’s not the pants (or lack thereof) that make you able to push someone out of the ring.

Personally, I’m not really losing sleep over this issue, but I do find it a bit humorous that the trend worldwide has been for people to be more and more naked (witness women at the beach, for example 50 years ago, and today), but as for our fat men? Cover them up. I couldn’t agree more.

Best quote from this article: “We have no intention of allowing children with pants into the ring.”

So there.

I dislike ceremony, tradition. Things like graduation ceremonies, marriage ceremonies, etc. and so on. These things generally bore the hell out of me at the same time as they perplex me.

The reason why I loathe them is that they just become rote behavior…like…OK, maybe in the first marriage ceremony it was touching that the husband and wife exchanged vows to declare the sanctity of the bond, but after it’s done enough times, it just becomes a formality. Kind of like how when you go watch a Hollywood action movie, the plot is completely unimportant. You know…you’re really just enjoying the explosions and car chases while Neo / The Terminator / Rambo cross all the major plot points on the way to triumph.
